Sunbathing is good for you

Dr. Malcolm Kendrick

News announcer: ‘We interrupt the series of blogs on ‘what causes heart disease’ to bring you (slightly delayed), breaking news from Sweden… Sunbathing is good for you. Shock horror etc.’

Someone sent me this news story today, and I thought I should share it with you. For many, many, years I have been telling people that lying in the sun, getting a nice tan, is one of the healthiest things you can do. Despite the howls of anguish from all dermatologists telling us that one photon of sunlight is one photon too many. ‘You will cause people to die from skin cancer.’ Ho hum:

  1. I generally stay out of the sunlight or at least I try to. I perused his article and didn’t see any mention of sun screens. For me the aging effects of the sun are more the reason I stay away rather than skin cancer. I have never been a sun worshipper as a matter of fact I dislike sitting in the sun unless the air is very cold and the sun warms me. I have never sat on a beach or by a pool in the sun but I do walk outside and although I try to walk in shade if at all possible I cannot avoid the sun. Would be interested to find out more specifics.

    • I agree – I too hate sitting in the sun and wear sunscreen on my face. Having said that, I’ve always thought that a little bit of sun, in the morning say, to be very very beneficial. And when the sun is very strong, it’s far better to cover up or stay out of it than cover up with sunscreen…

  2. That was a fascinating article! I have often thought it odd that doctors encourage us to take vitamin D due to all the health benefits, and then tell us to stay out of the sun. I agree that possibly morning sun is better so you don’t get sunburned, but this makes so much sense to me. Good news for us Arizonans! 🙂
